GRAPHYTE GRAPHICS: Out of the Blue, Into the Black
The Soothing Shadows of Juliet Jacobson
Artist Juliet Jacobson specializes in dark, grayscale graphite drawings and etchings. Photorealistic, ominous and sensual, Jacobson’s work morphs stark reality into subtly surreal, defiantly mystic visions. With extreme focus, she painstakingly layers swath after swath of graphite onto soft, monolithic sheets of paper. In a cuttingly precise interview, the artist tells HuffPost that the intention of her complex work is to always create a truthful rendering.
Juliet Jacobson explains, “I know that a drawing is finished when the materials reach a saturation point…This working process is a satisfying experience. I understand that some might find it oppressive to undertake something so laborious, but for me it’s comforting to have such serene, abiding work.”
